Young Scientist

The BT Young Scientist Competition is one of the most eagerly awaited events on the school calendar. It is an annual celebration of the ingenuity and imagination of Irish students.

Our students have researched and submitted projects every year and generally these qualify for inclusion in the public display in the RDS. Prize-winning projects have included Disabled Parking in Carrick on Shannon by Donal O’Conghaile, A Thought for Discipline by Magthel Odendaal, Students Attitudes to Homework and Study by Helen Moran and The Integration of Non-national Students by Klaraghkaitlyn Mulvey.

Nathan Feeney was given the Highly Commended Award for two consecutive years for his studies The Tuck Shop and The Breakfast Club. Other projects that have been highly commended include The Role of the Babysitter by Sinead Moran and The Influence of Gender on the subjects we Choose by Shannon Anne Lim and Karen O’Dowd.

Five projects qualified for inclusion in the 2009 BT Young Scientist Exhibition, and while none of these were ultimately successful the achievement of reaching the final stages in the RDS reflects great credit on all concerned.

Most recently, Patrick Sweeney, Chloe Daniels and Annette Moran were awarded the runner-up group award for their project The Connection Between the Origin of Music and Birdsong. The project garnered a lot of attention during the competition and Patrick was interviewed by RTE's Derek Mooney on natinal radio. Patrick, Chloe and Annette later received a very warm reception from the delegates at the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools Annual Convention held in March 2015 in Galway.
