MAY UPDATE
Talented Youth 2010
6 of our students participated in the Aptitude Test in Sligo for this annual event and all have qualified to attend D.C.U. - who promote the event - in the summer. Since 1992 thousands of students have taken part in national talent searches by sitting an aptitude test. Applicants scoring highly are offered places on all academic programmes offered by CTYI (the Irish Centre for talented youth). These include summer residential/commuter programmes and on-line correspondence courses.
So congrats to our "Super Six" - Gary Egan and Anna Hitch (4th yr), Jessica McKeon and Amber Garvey (3rd yr) Ben Donohue and John Gannon (2nd yr).

Ladies Football

The fourth Year of the second year Girls Blitz took place in Carrick-on-Shannon Community School on March 24. A number of changes were made to the competition with first years allowed to compete for places on the team as well as more teams participating. Both Ballinamore and Carrick-on-Shannon entered two teams with Convent of Mercy Roscommon, St Nathy’s, Ballaghaderreen, Lough Allen College Drumkeeran, and Mohill Community College. Carrick-on-Shannon and St. Nathys emerged from group A whilst Convent of Mercy and Lough Allen College emerged from group B. Convent of Mercy defeated Nathy’s to reach the final, whilst Carrick-on-Shannon fought off a brave Lough Allen Challenge.

The final was a tough affair with the visitors racing into a two point lead. Carrick kept their composure and just before half time, Emma Guckian slid the ball past the Roscommon keeper to give the home side a narrow lead at the interval. Captain Sorcha Bruen added to quick points early in the second half, one from play and one from a free. The last few minutes were both tough and tense but the home side managed to hold on to their lead and win back the title they last won in 2007. Joe Flynn presented the shield to Sorcha Bruen after the game and complimented all teams on their standard of play and sportsmanship.
Our
First year girls participated in the annual Roscommon blitz on May 11. After losing to a very strong Glenamaddy side in the opening game they emerged from their group by defeating the home side Roscommon in a nail biting match (and we thought it was football they were playing !) They put in a gallant effort in the semi-final against Strokestown but came up short in the end. Their behaviour, skill level and commitment has to be complimented.
Radio

On May 10th Carrick-on-Shannon Community School Radio, otherwise known as 2TY3, commenced their community radio broadcasts on 101.6FM. Also going out on the World Wide Web, this project is the culmination of eight months planning and hard work. There are documentary, feature, music mix, bilingual, eclectic music and sports programmes all crammed into the three hour daily broadcasts. The local service lasts until Thursday May 20, when Joe Bambrick will sign off on his “
Home and Away” Show. The Transition Year cohort must be complimented on their drive and commitment, and the array of skills garnered through this project will stand to them should they embark on a career in Media. The launch night, while low key, was another fine example of how the group put together an outside broadcast and showcased their work to both guests and a wider audience. Well done to all concerned and thanks to all staff and students for making it happen.
Key program (2009/10)

12 second year students have just completed their 4th and final residential stay in Lisnaskea's Share Centre at the end of April. This Business and activity based program saw our students work with students from 2 schools from Northern Ireland. Our school will again participate in this Cross-Border initiative next year.
2010 County Enterprise Awards
On Thursday11th March 3 teams from Transition Year took part in the final of the Senior County enterprise Awards. 28 teams in all participated, and we were successful in two of the categories. the "Card Company" got runner-up in the Best display award, and the "Discount Card Company" won the overall county title and will go on to represent Leitrim in Croke Park on Tuesday April 27th.
It is a great honour for the school to be representing the county at this prestigious event.

JANUARY UPDATE
Schools Cross Country
We had a number of athletes competing in the Connaught Regional event in Sligo at the end of January and the following have qualified for the Provincial finals: David Bruen in Minor Boys, Cathal McElgunn and Cian Murray in Junior boys, and Daire Farrell and Aaron McLoughlin in the Inter boys. A special "well done" to Daire who won his race. The finals take place in Galway on February 11th.
P.S. Daire Farrell continued his winning ways by taking his second title in 2 years in the Connaught Inter Boys final after a thrilling sprint finish - very well done !
Ladies Football
The Junior and Senior Girls teams did not perform as well as anticipated this year.
It was always going to be a struggle at junior level as injuries, illness and the exodus of a lot of last year’s panel meant a relatively new team had to be formed. Having won against Cuala, our Junior Girls lost to the Ursuline, Sligo and Manorhamilton. Our Senior team was also affected by injury and the loss of players who wished to focus on study. A win against Drumshanbo was the highlight of a poor campaign which saw losses to a better prepared and fitter Ballinamore and Summerhill who advance from the group.
Our first year girls performed very well in a Blitz held in October and they along with second years have recommenced training for the first/second year blitz hosted by Carrick-on-Shannon in late March, and a further 9-a-side blitz to be held for first years only in Roscommon. There is a lot to be optimistic about given the positive attitude to training shown so far.

2TY3
Our School Radio Station plans to recommence broadcasting in early February. Both Transition Years and last year’s TY group and a few other radio enthusiasts will use this opportunity to hone their presenting and production skills for our Community Radio project which is due to commence for two weeks in May. We have not been approved a licence yet but a strong application was submitted to the BCI and the school is hopeful we can secure it.
Media Week
The TY class are involved in their first of two media weeks. On Thursday 28 of January Seamus Duke formerly of Shannonside FM and now of the Roscommon People and Mid West Radio will deliver a talk to the class about his career in Broadcasting. On Friday January 29 Eileen Magnier from RTE will speak about her career in news, whilst on Monday February 1, a full day Radio workshop will be given by Ruth Scott (2FM), Rory O Brien (free lance producer) and Barbara Nic Dhonacha (I 102).
New Officers elected to Parents Association
We take this opportunity to congratulate and wish every success to our recently elected officers - Joe Shannon, Margaret Melia, Mary Dolan and Kathy Wickham.
