APRIL UPDATE
Senior Boys Football 2010-2011
The senior boys had a very good year in 2010-11. The season began in September when the Leitrim post primary schools competition began. Round 1 saw a meeting of Carrick CS and St. Felims, Balinamore. This was an entertaining game and Carrick won by 4 points in the end with St. Felims putting on a spirited show in the second half. This paired us with Mohill Community College in the semi final. This was a very close game, but the Carrick boys pulled away in the last ten minutes to win by 6 points.
On the other side of the draw Manorhamilton were recording some good victories and would prove to be strong opposition in the final. Carrick got off to a flying start with a fortunate goal from Liam Conlon and a second goal made by Liam Murtagh and scored by Joseph O’Rourke. Manorhamilton piled on the pressure in the second half and only for the excellent defending of Sean McDermott and Joe Garvey Carrick would have been in trouble. A Daragh Feely goal late on finished the game as a contest and Captain Aaron Duignan accepted the Corn Breifne cup on behalf of a delighted Carrick team.
Connaught Colleges campaigns
The Connacht Colleges league competition began with a home game against Garbally College. This turned out to be an easy victory. Round 2 against Roscommon CBS was a tight, difficult game which would set the tone for further meetings in the future. We lost 0-11 to 0-6 on the day. A victory over Oranmore and a draw against St. Attractas in Tobercurry allowed us to qualify for the league semi-final. The semi-final against Balluhaunis was a flyer of a game and we won by 4 points to set up a final against Roscommon CBS. The final belonged to CBS. They were a powerful team on the day and won on a score line of 1-14 to 1-7.
The championship came next and preparations were going very well. The first round paired us against Ballyhaunis. This game was played at a very fast pace and the Carrick boys showed great spirit, coming back from 5 points and then 4 points to force the game into extra time. We finished the game strong and won 2-15 to 1-14. Kiltimagh were our opponents in the semi-final after they beat a fancied Headford side. This game went right to the wire and only for a late goal from Liam Conlon, 3 minutes from time to force extra time the game was lost. Again the Carrick boys showed great spirit and won the game in extra time by 2 points. The highlight of extra time was a Darragh Feely goal at the beginning of the first period. This final saw us paired against Roscommon CBS again and we were determined to make up for the poor showing in the league final.
The final was played in Elphin and a huge crowd of supporters attended. Carrick got off to a great start with points from Darragh Feely, Alan Glancy and Joseph O’Rourke. Roscommon got themselves into the game and after a6 minutes the score was 3 points each. The Roscommon boys piled on the pressure and scored 6 unanswered points. Joseph O’Rourke had a great goal effort superbly saved by the Roscommon keeper. The score at half time was 0-9 to 0-3 in favour of Roscommon and it looked like they would stroll to victory in the second half.
The Carrick team started the second half at lightening speed with points from Fintan Sweeney and Liam Conlon. Alan Glancy scored a free and the deficit was down to 3 points. Sweeney, Conlon and Daire farrell combined to set up Liam Greene but his effort went narrowly wide. Both side exchanged points. Daire Farrell got on to the end of a great move but was denied by another wonderful save from the Roscommon keeper. Carrick kept the pressure on right to the end but it was not enough. The game finished 0-12 to 0-9 in favour of Roscommon CBS. A great year ended for the Carrick boys but no cups to show for their endeavours!
Ag. Science Field Trip
On 7 March, all Leaving Cert Ag Science students travelled to Ballyhaise Agricultural College. We had a very informative and entertaining day. We learned first - hand how to stomach tube a lamb and dock his tail, set a fertiliser spreader, condition score cows and many more snippets which will be of great benefit for our School assessment and for any of us that follow a career in Agriculture.
Many thanks to the staff of Ballyhaise for organising the day, and to Mr Mc Guinness and Mrs Farrell for travelling with us.
