Frenchpark was the venue for the U14 Girls Connacht Final between Carrick CS and Dunmore CS on Friday, May 6.
The match got off to a slow start with both teams creating chances but failing to convert to points. The rain brought a change and after fifteen minutes Siobhan Divilly scored a goal for Dunmore. Carrick hit back with point from Ciara Dowd and a goal from Katie Daly. With a point from Dunmore’s Laura Ann Costello, the match was all square with twenty two minutes gone. Two more points from Laura Ann Costello and Dunmore were leading the match at half time : 1.03 to 1.01.
The second half began with a goal from Laura Ann Costello. Points from Carrick’s Emma Guckian and Ciara Dowd along with Dunmore’s Nuala Hanley left the game 2.04 to 1.03 for Dunmore fifteen minutes into the half. Dunmore kept going with a goal and point from Laura Ann Costello. A brilliant save from Carrick’s Aisling Egan showed why these girls were in the final. Another goal from Laura Ann Costello and Dunmore proved themselves worthy winners of the title. Both teams played a great match and we wish them luck in the future.
A Successful Year for Ladies Football in Carrick-on-Shannon C.S.
The 2010-2011 academic year will go down as one of the more successful years for ladies football in Carrick-on-Shannon Community School. With the decision not to enter a senior team, more attention was placed on the first and second year girls. It was felt that the junior team would struggle given the age profile of players, with over half of the team still eligible for under-fourteen. That indeed was the case, with the juniors failing to win any group games. Coola V.S, Ursuline College, Sligo, and St. Clare’s Comprehensive had too much for our relatively young charges, but improvements were made from game to game.
Our Under Fourteen girls had a whirlwind year, only losing their opening encounter with Ballinamore Post-Primary and the Connaught Final versus Dunmore Community School. Tweaks here and there, strength in depth in the panel, and an unbelieveable will to win saw us cruise to victory against Drumkeeran, St. Nathy’s, Ursuline and Gort Community School. A defining game was a challenge against Ballinamore Post-Primary which saw us reverse our two point defeat earlier in the season to a thirty-two point win. That game did a lot for the team’s confidence and self belief. Our Semi-Final against Holy Rosary College Mountbellew was a tough encounter with us coming from seven points down twenty-five minutes into the game to winning by a margin of seven at a rain and wind swept Park Sean.
Perhaps the novelty of getting to a Connaught final got to our girls a little, but sometimes luck plays major factor in finals. Injuries, missed chances, dubious refereeing decisions, turnovers and conceding a rather sloppy goal early in the second half militated against Carrick finding their rhythm. Six points down with five minutes left Carrick poured forward but Dunmore’s Laura Anne Costello split our defence twice late in the game to have the record books show us on the wrong side of a 4-5 to 1-3 score line. On the day Dunmore proved sharper, better drilled and hungrier but the final score does not justify our work ethic and effort throughout the game.
Six days later our first year girls made amends for the loss, when under the stewardship of Mr. Kavanagh, they annexed the Convent of Mercy Blitz in Roscommon. Our last victory in this tournament came in 2006 and a lot of that team played their part on relatively successful Junior teams in the school. Victories over Summerhill Athlone, Roscommon and Strokestown shows that our school can now compete against schools that were far ahead of us over the last three or four years. In October the same first year outfit were runners up in a Blitz in Ballinamore, so this win is certainly no fluke. Also many of these first years played a pivotal role in our under fourteen campaign.
In March we entered two teams in the Roscommon Leitrim first/second year Girls 11-a-side Blitz. Carrick B performed very well getting to the semi-final where they came up against Carrick A, the eventual winners who retained the title from the previous year by beating a much fancied Convent of Mercy team.
All in all the successes of this and last year at First/Second Year level augurs well for the future. Effort must be maintained and a willingness to learn and improve is an imperative to bridge the gap between Runners up and winners. Roll on 2011-2012!
Key Programme 2010/11
12 students from 2 year took part in this year’s programme. The venue changed for this year from Lisnaskea’s Share Centre to the Roscor Centre, near Beleek. The students were thrilled with the experience and are looking forward to their Graduation in Belfast on Tuesday, May 24th.
Plans are well underway for next year’s program and the briefing session for our present 1 years is taking place on this coming Friday (May 13)
