Launch of our School Web Site (end Nov 08)
Welcome to our site. We hope you will find it informative, and easy to use.We encourage feedback, not just on the site but on the school itself. There is a "contact" section included in the site menu available for your use.We would also love to hear from former students, and maybe in the future we can set up a forum for past pupils to renew old acquaintances.
We would be more than happy for our Parents Association to use our site to pass messages/ information on to the general parent body, and will cooperate in every way possible with them.
We trust you will enjoy our photos, almost all of which have been taken by staff members. Thanks to Mr.Bambrick, Mr. Byrne , Ms. Collins,Mrs. Delorey, Mrs. Earley and Ms.McNulty for adding their photos to my own.A special thank you to James Molloy for the use of his picures of the Presidential Visit.

Newsletter - 3 May 2009 :
Juvenile Boys do the Double:
After their success in winning the Connaught League title the squad entered the Championship in confident mood. A bye in the 1st round meant that St Nathy’s were our first opponents. A late Brendan Flynn penalty allowed us breathing space after a close encounter, and we progressed to the semi by virtue of the 2-13 to 1-9 scoreline. The semi against Ballyhaunis was an even closer affair. There were never more than 2 points between the sides, and our lack of discipline in conceding too many frees almost cost us dear. We were perhaps fortunate to scrape through by the narrowest of margins, winning by 1-9 to 11 points. The final played in Boyle was a repeat of the League decider as St. Attracta’s of Tubbercurry overcame the challenge of Rice College to set up the return clash.we started the final well and were boosted by the return of Fintan Sweeney and David O’Dowd from injury. Carrick held a 2 point lead at the interval 0-6 to 0-4. The Sligo outfit controlled the next 20 mins, scoring 2-3 and building up a 6 point advantage. Our side recovered their composure with Michael McManus scoring a crucial goal to bring us back into contention. Conor Farrell, Liam Murtagh and Joe O’Rourke started to dominate possession and with 3 minutes remaining the sides were back on equal terms. Attracta’s regained the lead, but 2 points by Joe O’Rourke at the death were the matchwinners. The final score read 1-13 to 2-9 and Carrick had achieved a remarkable recovery and had recorded a groundbreaking double of Connaught “B” League and Championship. Heartiest congratulations to a highly talented and commited bunch of players and to their coach, Seamus Mallon
Ladies Football:
Our Junior Girls team were defeated in the Connaught Semi final just after the last Newsletter was published. The team put in a tremendous effort and hopefully can bounce back next year and finish the job!
2nd Year Girls Blitz:
On April 29 second year girls from Mohill Community College, Convent of Mercy Roscommon, and St. Nathy’s College participated in this year’s event. This was the third year of the event and a third name went on the shield with St. Nathy’s seeing off the Carrick girls in very difficult underfoot conditions. The action was carried live on 2TY3, which must be something of a first for any school. Other transition year students captured the action on cam-corder, camera and through written reports. A special match programme was also brought out by the class to mark the occasion.
School “TEENS IN THE WILD” Bereavment and Separation Group:
Our annual trip took place from Wednesday 22nd April to Friday 24th April. Thirteen students travelled to Delphi Adventure Centre outside Leenane in County Galway. Mrs Beirne, Mrs O’Conghaile and Mrs Walsh accompanied the students. The students had a packed programme of activities that included Surfing, Zip Wire, climbing the High Ropes and Canoeing on Ireland’s only fiord at Killary Harbour. The day began at 8.00am and students were involved in activities until bedtime. The students also had the opportunity to talk about personal issues to Mr. Liam Moroney who has been part of the support team since the beginning of the group nine years ago.The weather was a bit damp and we all enjoyed the magnificent scenery and time out from school activities. We came home tired but pleased with our trip.
All-Ireland Draughts Champions:
Congrats to our team of Darren McGreevy, Brendan Feely, Dylan Aherne and Nathan Feeny who emerged victorious at the recent championship. The contest took place in the Bridge House Hotel in Tullamore on April 22.They faced tough competition from various schools around the country but after several hours of play the Carrick team came out on top with Mitchelstown A just a half-point behind and the Mitchelstown B team took 3rd place. (see photo on school website). Brendan Feely came 3rd in the individual competition. Mrs Delorey and Mrs Keenan were in charge of the teams and we wish to thank Mrs. Ahern who brought the boys to the competition.
JCSP:
The 2nd and 3rd year JCSP classes were brought go-Karting to reward them for their hard work this year. The third year group was presented with certificates of achievement in a simple ceremony on Thursday March 7. Well done to all.
Echoes from the Past:
One of the study modules for the TYO has been a study of Cistercian Architecture. This has blossomed into a joint venture with 2 artists working in Carrick’s Dock which culminated in an exhibition staged in late April/early May. The artwork on display (and for sale) was in the form of tiles and woollens which derived their patterns from the masons marks left by the Medieval stone masons who built the Irish Monasteries 850 years ago. The venture was another string in the bow of our transition years who have experienced a huge range of stimuli throughout the year.
2TY3:
We must compliment all the Transition Year students on their commitment in running the streamed based radio station since early March. We are reliably informed that we are the only secondary school in the world which is streaming radio shows on the internet. We had a very successful and well-attended launch on March 12. Some students have shown great aptitude as either presenters or producers or sales people. Programs are presented via the School website on 3 evenings per week (Tues – Thursday 5pm-7) and at lunchtimes during term. Well done to all concerned.
Yearbook:
The transition year class were responsible for publishing this year’s yearbook. Most of the articles were written by students in the year and a special thanks to the five students who worked over the Easter holidays in preparing the layout and photo selection.Holocaust Lecture: As part of the TY Holocaust Studies Module the school was privileged to host a lecture presented by a Holocaust survivor, Tomi Reichental on March 2. Attending were students from senior classes and some parents. The entire lecture was streamed live to every classroom and this engrossing talk fit in very well with the 60th anniversary of the setting up of the Holocaust memorial and the fact that over 40 of our students had visited Auschwitz-Birkenau as part of their continental tour last Halloween.
Gaisce:
John O’Mahony former Leitrim Manager and current Mayo Manager and TD presented the bronze medal awards in March to the Current leaving certificate students undertaking the President’s award. On the evening he gave an inspirational speech about pride in achievement and pride in your work. Afterwards, privately to one teacher he expressed how enjoyable and positive the whole occasion was, how impressed he was with the school and how Leitrim would always be dear to him since his exploits in 1994.
Connaught Schools Athletics:
The above championships take place for the first time on the new track in Athlone on Weds May 13th. We have a number of qualifiers for the finals. Our minor relay won the qualifier and 4 individuals also made the finals.2 Juniors excelled with Daire Farrell winning the 800 mts to go through and Aaron McLoughlin qualifying in 2 events. We also had a relay squad qualifying at intermediate level with 3 of that squad also qualifying to compete in their own individual events. Best of luck on Wednesday.
Key and Let Programs:
Both programs again ran successfully this year. There was very positive feedback from the 1st and 2nd yrs involved. Graduation for Key takes place in Belfast and for Let in Omagh in the near future. We have been accepted for both programs again next year. Thanks to Mr. Bambrick, Mr. Bredin, Miss McWeeney and Mrs. Beirne for giving of their time so generously to accompany the students on their residentials.
Junior Achievement:
3 class groups took part in the programs 1."Success Skills” and 2. “Bank your Future”. Volunteers from Bank of America came to work with the students on these initiatives. 2 class groups were brought on a tour of Sligo IT on May 7 and were presented with their certificates.
It is appropriate at this juncture to ask you to join with us in wishing our departing Principal, Joseph Flynn every success and happiness on his retirement after 15 years of dedicated and commited service to the school and the community. He has provided a very steady hand guiding the school through the trials and tribulations of its formative years, and leaves it in very good order for his successor. Many thanks, and the sincerest of best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement. We extend the same best wishes to Brendan Kelly who retired in early May. Brendan was a very popular woodwork teacher who was always available with help and advice for fellow staff, and who played no small part in helping to set up this website. We also wish our students every success with their exams and hope you all have a happy and safe summer.
